Interesting news from the British Medical Journal Acupuncture for lumbar disc herniation: a systematic review and meta-analysis "Acupuncture showed a more favourable effect in the treatment of LDH than lumbar traction, ibuprofen, diclofenac sodium, meloxicam, mannitol plus dexamethasone and mecobalamin, fugui gutong capsule plus ibuprofen, mannitol plus dexamethasone, loxoprofen and huoxue zhitong decoction. However, further rigorously designed, large-scale RCTs are needed to confirm these findings."

This is a well written explanation of the difference between acupuncture and dry needling and trained Acupuncturists verses people who have just done a weekend. Unfortunately in the UK we don't have the recognition and regulations Acupuncturists have in AUS and the US. There is no national board to check your therapists credentials. You could ask for their association details and check out the hours of study. To hold a BSc. in the UK you must have done at least 3000 hrs of study. Physiotherapists only need 80 hrs to insure themselves, Chiropractors one weekend and the field is completely open to anyone else, no training, registration or insurance is required at all in British law. So for safe effective treatment, be sure to check out your therapists qualifications first.

Adam White, L.Ac. CEO, HealthCMi Acupuncture Ankylosing Spondylitis Relief Confirmed Researchers conclude that acupuncture and herbal medicine provide relief for patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Ankylosing spondylitis is a type of arthritis characterized by inflammation of the spine, joints, tendons, or ligaments. Long-term, AS can lead to ankylosis, which is stiffening and often immobility caused by fusion of bones. Ankylosing spondylitis is categorized in Traditional Chinese Medicine in several domains: lower back pain, kyphosis, spinal rigidity. In the advanced stages of the illness when bone fusion is present, it is categorized as zhu jie yang (bamboo spine).

This is great news for the proof of how acupuncture works. The meridians of acupuncture are described as channels that run between all of the tissues, muscles and organs, in which an energy called qi flows. Scientists have identified an organ made up of a network of vessels that run through every tissue and organ and elicit an electrical charge when they are squeezed by movement of the body. What scientists are now calling the Interstitium, which contains bioelectric energy, has for thousands of years been know by the Chinese as Meridians or Jing Luo (channels and connections) containing the life force of qi. It is now officially no longer hocus pocus :)

Adam White, L.Ac. CEO, HealthCMi Acupuncture Restores Facial Movements For Stroke Patients Researchers find acupuncture highly effective and that scalp acupuncture is particularly important for post-stroke patients. Scalp acupuncture significantly boosts the effectiveness of body style acupuncture for the treatment of post-stroke facial paralysis. In a randomized controlled trial, researchers determined that the addition of scalp acupuncture to a standard acupuncture therapeutic regimen increases positive patient outcomes by over 20%. In the investigation, body style acupuncture achieved a 71.4% total effective rate. The addition of scalp acupuncture to the treatment protocol increased the total effective rate to 93.1%. [1] Based on the data, the researchers conclude that scalp acupuncture optimizes patient outcomes for patients with post-stroke facial paralysis.
